EXTRA COURSEWORKCIE 4941 - Special Topics in Curriculum, Instruction and Evaluation:Introduction to Engineering DesignTextbook: Engineering by Design by Gerard Voland, 2nd edition (2003), ISBN#0131409190.Design Project:Students work on the design and construction of a product in their engineering discipline of interest (Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering or Chemical Engineering). No formal lectures take place; rather, each student works independently with guidance and oversight from their faculty adviser to identify a problem to be solved, write technical specifications and acceptance test procedures, identify design alternatives, identify criteria to select the best design approach, model and simulate the product before it actually exists, build the product and see if it meets the stated specifications. The design project culminates with a formal end-of- term presentation and product prototype demonstration. A final report summarizes the entire design effort. Each student shall: take on-line quizzes covering topics from reading assignmentsregularly interact with-and submit progress reports to the faculty adviser give a final oral presentation and product demonstrationsubmit a final reportGrading Scheme:Online quizzes20%Final Presentation andProduct Demonstration40%Final Report40%Textbook Topics:Role of engineers in societyIdentifying a design topic, needs vs. wants, prospective customer surveyMaking effective technical presentationsTechnical reports and other written communicationDesign alternatives, evaluation criteriaDesign matrixTechnical specifications, user interfaceDesign of experimentsAcceptance testsSimulation and modelingCircuit simulation, hardware/software development toolsIntellectual property, patents, engineer logbooksEngineering ethicsSafety and liabilityEngineering economicsIndustry standards and conventionsProject planning and managementDesign for testing safety, manufacture, maintenance and servicingProposed Final Report Outline:1. Statement of WorkConcisely state your design project goals.(What isthe product supposed to do?).2. Assessing Customers Needs and WantsWho is your prospective customer(e.g., Is your product for the mass market, or for a particular sector such as local law enforcement agencies? How were the customers needs and wants determined?(e.g., Did you conduet an infomial survey? Who was surveyed?)What are they? Describe each on a scale from “Need” to Want”(Give survey results, a need” is an absolutely necessary feature, whereas a “want is desirable but not essential to the operation of your product)Do any conflicting needs exist?3. Technical SpecificationsHow will your working prototype tested to determine whether or not the design was a success or failure (acceptance test procedures)What are your technical specifications (stated numerically)? You should provide enough information for an independent design group a subcontracting engineering firm , for example to design the product to your satisfaction assuming that they satisfy your technical specifications during acceptance testing.4. Draft Users ManualStep-by-step instructions of how to use the product, including drawings of the user interface.5. Design AlternativesDescribe at least three different approaches that you believe show promise of meeting or exceeding the design specifications Draw a block diagram for each.Which of these is the lowest-risk approach and why?Which of these is the highest-risk approach and why?Which of these approaches is technically the most difficult?Winch of these may potentially yield the least expensive product?Which of these will be “fall-back” design alt if one of the components that you plan to purchase becomes unavailable or does not arrive on tuneEvaluation Criteria and Selection of Best Design ApproachWhat evaluation criteria went into determining which of the design alternatives you had selected? Evaluate each of your design alternatives according to the criteria stated above.(Present these evaluations m a decision matrix) Which design alternative did you select?6. Principles of Operation, Simulation and ModelingExplain the theory and technical details of operation for the design alternative that you have selected Use graphical aids wherever possibleResults of Simulation and ModelingPredict some aspect of your products performance using any combination of the following: numerical calculations; software simulation; actual performance testing of subsystems used m the product, etcPaper DesignDetailed drawings, flowcharts, parts list, assembly instructions, etc for your productFinal Product DescriptionPhotographs of the final product, acceptance test resultsProvide a parts list, where they were purchased or fabricated and state your total cost to develop and constructe the product.11.
