It is an article about “voluntary work”. The theme of this module is for social interaction, aims to enable students to understand the different types and means of interpersonal communication. Reading part is about “Helping those in need”. The Ss will learn more about various forms of volunteer service activities, developing the spirit of dedication and sense of social responsibility. So this article is a good supplementary material for our students. l The analysis of the studentsThe students in Grade Eight are in a kind of transformative period. They have learned many language structures to use English in practical situations. Though they are lack of vocabulary, they are eager to communicate with others on familiar topics. In this unit, I will encourage the Ss to communicate on this topic. The Ss should help others in need in their lives. Or they can just imagine what kind of kindness they can do if they have time. At the same time, I will introduce some Chinese Volunteers Associations to them so that they can know more about voluntary. Their abstract thinking and cognitive capability have developed a lot. So I must try my best to help them keep up their passion and build the feeling of success and self-confidencel Teaching objectives Knowledge objectives: 1. To master the new words & phrases 2. Help the students to master the main idea of the reading part and encourage them to retell the stories with the help of some key words. Ability objectives: 1. To train their scanning and skimming abilities 2. To find some key information from the material and summarize the main idea.3. To guess the new words according to language environment4. To be encouraged to further the additional information about voluntary work. Moral objectives: Make a deeper impression on knowing more about voluntary work.Take an active part in types of volunteer work, try their best to help others in need.l Teaching main and difficult points: To master the new words & phrases Help the students to master the main idea of the reading part and encourage them to retell the stories with the help of some key words. (Talk about these questions in groups, to understand voluntary work and in need)Then tell the Ss: We are going to learn about voluntary work in this unit. Voluntary work is something you do without being paid to help people in need.Step 2 Presentation Activating background knowledge by pairing and brainstorming, Raise Qs (1) Have you ever done any voluntary work? (2) Where can we do voluntary work? (Introduce some more words they will use in this lesson, such as nursing home, orphanage, hospital, health recovery centre for the disabled, and discuss the people who the Ss will offer to help for)To realize the words: disabled, suffer, serious, illness, difficulty, suffer from, and so on(3) How can we do voluntary work?Discuss in groups, then exchange the results3.
