Today we will enter Unit 3 Im more outgoing than my sister and learn how to compare people using comparative forms.II PresentationFirst, lets see: whats the difference between them?Liu is tall. But Pan is short. So we can say, Liu is tall, and Liu is taller than Pan. But Pan is short. Pan is shorter than Liu. Nuoyis eyes are big. Dajuns eyes ar small. So we can say. Now, look at these three sentences. Liu is taller than Pan. Xie Na is more outgoing than Shuijunyi. Ning Zetao swims faster than Chen Yixun. Can you find the rules of comparative forms?III ConclusionWhen we describe people, we use adj.s like tall and outgoing, and adv.s like swim. When we compare people, we add two things to the sentence. First we add er or more to the adj. or adv, then we add the word than to suggest the comparing. But when do we use er and when do we use more? Are there any other rule? You can learn more rules if you open your book and turn to page 114. First, for most one-syllable words like cold, bright, young and a few two-syllable, we add er after them.Second, for words end with e, we just add r after them.Third, for accent closed syllable words with only one consonant like big and thin, wirte the consonant twice then add er.Forth, for words end with a consonant and y like easy and happy, replace y with i then add er.Fifth, for all multi-syllabe words and some two-syllable words like serious, delicious, interesting and important, add more before them.Last, there are some irregular comparative form you need to keep in mind.IV ConsolidationIn the end, here are some exercise for you, please write the correct comparative forms of these adj.s down, please pause here for one minute and check your answers. Here are more adv.s. You also have one minute. Have a try! Are you correct? Some adv. ends with ly like early, its comparative form is earlier. While loudlys comparative form is more loudly, why is that?Thats because when most adv.s comparative forms have the same structure as adj., adv.s like quietly and quickly, which are adj.s without ly all needs to add more to form comparative forms.V HomeworkNow, try to make some sentences to compare yourself with your friends like this: Im funnier than Andy, and I works harder than Betty. Im friendlier than Cathy, and I speaks more quietly than Danny.
