Lesson 67 Volcanoes Why does Tazieff risk his life like this?Haroun Tazieff was born in Warsaww:s:n.华沙（波兰首都）,Poland,in 1914.He was a leading French volcano expert,photographer and director.He wrote and produced numerous documentaries,dkjumentri n.纪录片 on volcanoes.Haroun Tazieff,the Polish scientist,has spent his lifetime studying active volcanoes and deep caves in all parts of the world.In 1948,he went to Lake Kivu in the Congo to observe a new volcano which he later named Kituro.Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes.It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwandarund n.卢旺达（东非国家）,and is in the Albertinelbti:n (western)Rift艾伯丁裂谷,a part of the Great Rift Valley.Lake Kivu empties into（注入）the Ruzizi River,which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika,tnji:k.The name comes from kivu which means lake in Bantu language,just like the words tanganyika or nyanzaninz尼亚萨湖.Great Rlft ValleyLake KivuTazieff was able to set up his camp very close to the volcano while it was erupting violently.Though he managed to take a number of brilliant photographs,campshe could not stay near the volcano for very long.He noticed that a river of liquid rock was coming towards him.It threatened to surround him completely,but Tazieff managed to escape just in time.Liquid rockHe waited until the volcano became quiet and be was able to return two days later.This time,he managed to climb into the mouth of Kituro so that he could take photographs and measure temperatures.Tazieff has often risked his life in this way.He has been able to tell us more about active volcanoes than any man alive.Topics for discussion 1 Have you ever seen a volcano/been into a deep cave?Describe your experience.2 Suppose that you were going to become a professional photographer.What subjects would you choose to photograph and why?3 Should people risk their lives to study volcanoes?What is your opinion?
