Understand the given reading material using the skills learned in this period.Analysis of the studentsThe students have got some common sense about discoveries and inventions, so it is not difficult for them to understand the conception of invention. However, they have little chance to cultivate their imagination and creativity. Besides, their ability to discover and solve the problem needs to be developed. Teaching proceduresStep One: Revision1. Introduce the topic in this unit by brainstorming discoveries and inventionswhile organizing some mini-discussions according to the pictures.Look at the pictures and have mini-discussions.Discussion (1): what can you find from the picture?(The two famous persons. They are )Discussion (2): what are the two men doing?(Newton is hiton the head by an apple while Jobs is holding his great brand logo Apple )Discussion(3): which do you think is an invention? And your reasons.()Discussion(4):what about these pictures? Are they inventions?(air-conditioners; an aeroplane; cellphones; a bottle of perfume; an amphibious car)【Purpose】To get the students involved, lead them to the topic of this period, introduce the teaching focus and activate students knowledge about invention in a natural and communicative way.Step Two: Pre-reading【Purpose】To help students have a general idea of the learning focus and guide them to guess the advantages of each invention shown in each picture using their imagination .1. Electric shoes(make electricity with every step you take)2. Inflatable bicycle(simply let the air out and put your bike in a bag)3. Edible chopsticks(both delicious and environmentally friendly)Step Three: ReadingTask1: Focusing on the titleHelp students to read the title The Problem of the Snakes and ask them to predict in pairs the content of the text based on the title and pictures.【Purpose】To ensure that students are aware of the connection between creation and the scientific process. Task2: Scanning for the main idea of the textAsk students to scan the text and then fill the blanks to fulfill the main idea of the text. The text narrates the problem of the snakes and presents the procedures of catching them and applying for a patent【Purpose】To enable students to strengthen their awareness of understanding reading material and help them know the importance of getting the main idea which always contributes to their basic reading skills.Task3: Skimming for some detailsBased on the six basic stages of inventing, the students are encouraged to fill in the chart by an interesting competition. At the stage of Test the solution several times, a student are invited to the blackboard to deliver a speech on How I developed my invention to remove the snakes. And then others will decide on whether he or she deserves the patent.【Purpose】To arouse the students interest in the text and get them to have a brief understanding of the text.Step Four: Post-readingHelp the students recall what they have learned by completing a short passage adapted from the text and provide them a chance to apply their creative and imaginative skills to a real task. Thats, encourage them to use the given materials to build an environmentally friendly house.【Purpose】 To develop the students ability to discover and solve the problems and cultivate their creativity and imagination.Step Five: Further reading1. Lead-in In China the most common etiquette in festivals is drinking. You can sit with friends face to face, talking and drinking. But what will you do when you live alone?2. Read and then answer the questions.Ask and answer:1) Is it a discovery or an invention?2) Who invented the robot? Whats the name of the robot?3) What inspired him to invent the robot? 4) What will happen to the robot if we pour it a drink?3. Watch the video to enhance the understanding of the reading material.【Purpose】To practice what the students have learned in this period via the given task and assess their learning effect.
