阅 读 训 练 一ASophie sat in the armchair that Joe bought her on their fortieth anniversary, watching the mailman busy sending mails. It was Valentines Day and there was more mail than usual. Sophie sighed and pushed herself up for the window using the arm of the chair for support. She stopped at the sink to wash the two dishes she had left after lunch. Then she took her pills. A florist (花商)appeared in front of Mrs. Masons house next door. Who would be sending Mrs. Mason flowers? Sophie wondered. Flowers made Sophie think of her Joe who died eight months ago. The delivery man knocked at the door but no one seemed to be answering, so he looked around and started toward Sophies house. Would you take a delivery for your neighbor?” the man said loudly. Yes, Sophie answered. Sophie looked at the roses, yellow, the color Joe had always chosen! She stared at them for a while, filled a vase with water, then tenderly arranged the roses and greens, and carried them into the sitting room. It was five oclock when Mrs. Mason knocked at Sophies front door. Sophies cheeks were flushed. She was turning hot with shame. At the sight of the rose, Mrs. Mason said, Oh, good, You put the roses in water. Then you saw the card. I hope it didnt startle(使惊吓)you to see Josephs handwriting. Joseph had asked me to bring you the roses the first year, so I could explain for him. He didnt want to alarm you. He arranged it with the florist last April. Such a good man, your Joseph. Sophie had stopped listening. Her heart was pounding as she picked up the small white envelope she had missed earlier. It had been lying beside the flower box all this time. With trembling hands, she removed the card. To my sunshine, it said. I love you with all my heart. Try to be happy when you think of me. Love, Joe.56.
