Consistency of Semantic Meaning with Structure and Context in English Writing【Abstract】Withthefurtherprogressofthesocialdevelopment,alargenumberoftalentswhoareproficientinEnglisharerequiredtomakecontributiontoourcountry.AsforcultivatingEnglishtalents,knowingthevarioussemanticmeaningwithstructureandcontextisthepriority.Inareal-worldsetting,passagesarenotshowedinisolation,butratherinacohesivemannerthatinvolvesasequenceofrelatedquestionstomeetusersinformationneeds.Thisarticleisdividedintothreeparts.ThefirstpartisLiteratureReview.ThesecondpartaimstoanalyzetheexampleswhicharerelatedtosemanticmeaningwithstructureandcontextinEnglishwritingandfindouttheexistingproblemsbasedonthem.Inthethirdpart,conclusionwillbemade.Byusingtheknowledgeofcognitivelinguisticandthroughanalysisandresearch,thisarticlehopestoprovidereferenceforlaterresearch.【Keywords】semanticmeaning;context;writing【作者簡介】李宛芯1995-,女,汉族,山东烟台人,鲁东大学,学生,教育硕士,研究方向:学科教学英语。1.IntroductionWhenawordorasentenceisplacedinaspecificcontext,themeaningitexpressescanonlybeoneofvarioussemanticmeaningswithstructureandevenbecomesatemporarymeaningwhichcannotbefoundinthedictionary.Theexactmeaningofawordmustbelimitedbyitslocale.“Trytofigureoutcontextualmeaningofwords.Andthesituationthatawordwithdistinctivesemanticmeaningsiscalledpolysemy.Polysemyisapivotalconceptwithindisciplinessuchasmediastudiesandlinguistics.Ithasapplicationsinpedagogyandmachinelearning,becausetheyrelyonword-sensedisambiguationandschemas.ThephenomenonofpolysemyisextremelycommoninEnglish.Manystudieshavebeenmadebyexpertsandscholars,andsomeachievementshavebeenmade.2.LiteratureReviewAccordingtoRobinson2020,CognitiveLinguisticsaninterdisciplinarybranchoflinguistics,combiningknowledgeandresearchfrombothpsychologyandlinguistics.Itdescribeshowlanguageinteractswithcognition,howlanguageformsourthoughts,andtheevolutionoflanguageparallelwiththechangeinthecommonmindsetacrosstime.Webster2020holdsthattheword“cognitiveisdefinedas“of,relatingto,being,orinvolvingconsciousintellectualactivitysuchasthinking,reasoning,orremembering.Merriam-Websteralsodefineslinguisticsas“thestudyofhumanspeechincludingtheunits,nature,structure,andmodificationoflanguage.3.ExamplesThemeaningofawordconstitutesacategory,themeaningisnotbetweenthesamecharacteristics,butsomehowlinked.Suchas“healthybody,“healthyexercise,“healthycomplexion,“healthyhavedifferentmeaningsindifferentcollocations,butthereisaconnectionbetweenthemeanings.Anotherexample,theevolutionofthemeaningoftheverb“explodeallowsustoseetherelationshipbetweenitsmeaning:1Thebombhiddeninthetrainexplodedwhenthetrainwaspullingoutofthestation.2Myfatherexplodedwithrageatthenews.3Afterthewar,thepopulationintheseareasexploded.4Hisbookexplodedthemythofplayboyactorswithsumptuouslifestyles.Inthesentence1,“explodeisthetypicalmeaningoftheword,inacertaincontainer,thecombustionproducesalotofhigh-pressuregasandreleasedinstantly,thegasswellssharply,resultinginahugenoise.Insentence2,“explodeismappedtothetargetareaof“humanbody-thecontaineroffeelings.Insentence3,themeaningof“explosionextendsfromspacetoquantitydomain.Inthesentence4,the“bombexplosionresultingconsequencesmaptoanabstractconceptof“breaking,overthrowing,whiletheoriginalmeaningof“explosionhasbeenabandoned.4.ConclusionThereasonwhywearetryingtostudytheconsistencyofsemanticmeaningwithstructureandcontextinEnglishwritingisthatstudentswillbeabletolearnEnglishmoreeffectivelyandaccurately.Atpresent,althoughschoolsatalllevelsarebeginningtofocusonvocabularymemorizingandcontextualteaching,studentscompetencetounderstandspecificwordsorphrasesisstillinadequate,whichmakesthesemanticmeaningwithstructureandcontextnotconsistent.Fromtheaboveresearch,wecanfindthatcontexthasanimportantinfluenceonthesemanticmeaningwithstructure,whichcannotbeisolatedfromthecontext.Weneedtotakethecontextasreferenceinordertoderivethepropertranslationofthesemanticmeaningwithstructure.References:【1】Robinson.P.2020.HandbookofCognitiveLinguisticsandSecondLanguageAcquisition.JRoutledge2:38.
