It can break through all kinds of barriers to reach students in a very special way. It can be the means for each child to find their light.A few years ago, I was blessed with the opportunity to teach pre-school students one afternoon a week. One of my most memorable students was Vanessa. She was five years old, had difficulty walking, and could not speak. We mostly sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to sit on my lap. One of her favorite songs was John the Rabbit. It was a call and response song where I sang the call and the students clapped two times while singing the repeating phrase, “Oh, yes!” Vanessa liked to put her hands together with mine and clap with me. We performed that song during every class, Vanessa and I clapping together. She never said or sang a word. One day late in the school year, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around, looked at me in the eye, clapped her tiny hands two times and said the words “Oh, yes!” I opened my mouth and could not speak. Through music, we had made a connection.Several years later, I came across Vanessa on the street in town. I stopped my car and waved to say hello. She waved back with a big smile on her face and then clapped her hands two times, mimicking the song we had performed in our music class. This precious little girl, through her connection with music, left an impression on me that will last forever.Every child has the ability to learn and grow. It is up to us educators to discover the way to reach each and every one of our students. We all, at one time or another, have pretended to be a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favorite songMost of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults, in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a song that I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I am moving along to the rhythmMost of the time, I do this on my way to workYes, that is true, I will be in my nice work clothes, jamming while driving or stopped at a traffic light I get weird(古怪的) looks from some people and others laughPersonally, I love to get lost in the rhythm of a song which leads me to share with you the importance of being silly! The definition for the word silly, according to the dictionary is: stupid, foolish and nonsensicalI know many people do not want to look foolishSo they walk around all serious, which in all honesty, is foolish! No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfectI dont care how educated, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal(节俭的), how rich, and so onNo one is perfect! So why pretend to be something you are not?Life is so shortYou never know when this beautiful journey will be over, so why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity(呆板)? Here is a quote by Souza, that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life:“Dance as though no one is watching you,Love as though you have never been hurt before,Sing as though no one can hear you,Live as though heaven is on earth”When we were kids, we had no idea of what limitations were and we had no care in theworld so we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to othersHowever, as we grew up, we lost that childlike innocenceSo dont lose the child that still lives within youThe next time you feel down
