You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the childs acquisition of each new skillthe first spoken words, the first _47_ steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often _48_ to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be _49_ to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural _50_ for life and his desire to find out new things for himself. Parents _51_ greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters, others are saver over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls _52_ represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the childs own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, _53_ is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not _54_ what they preach, their children may grow confused, and _55_ insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled. A sudden _56_ of a marked difference between their parents principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答。 A) consistency I) tempting B) alternate J) enthusiasm C) practice K) assume D) motivation L) independent E) awareness M) vary F) emotionally N) encouraged G) urgent O) currently H) imposed Key : L I N J M, H A C F E 200年6月四级真题改编 Part IV Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) (25 minutes) Section A Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so _47_ in the United States? Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more _48_ than civilian (百姓的) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect _49_ quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more _50_ than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage _51_ is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity (身份) than to step out of uniform? Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible (可减税的).They are often more comfortable and more _52_ than civilian clothes. Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their _53_ of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act _54_, on the job at least. Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their _55_ expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to _56_, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes. 注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答。 A) superior I) maintain B) durable J) indispensable C
