Withanunusuallysolidfoundationinphysicslaidduringseniormiddleschool(IreceivedstraightAsinvirtuallyeveryphysicsexam),IenteredthePhysicsDepartmentofDalianMarineUniversity.BythetimeIgraduatedinfouryears,whichcouldonlybedescribedastransitory,IfoundthatIhadbecomeemotionallyattachedtothisdiscipline.Realizingthatundergraduatestudieshadonlyexposedmetotherelativelyfundamentalknowledgeofthissubject,IembarkedonaMastersprogram,throughverycompetitiveentranceexaminations,infiber-opticalcommunicationattheCollegeofTelecommunicationEngineering,theUniversityofBeijingPostsandTelecommunications(UBPT).ThemomentIcameintocontactwiththisbrand-newfieldrepresentedbytelecommunications(Chinatendstolagbehindwesterncountriesinscientificandtechnologicaldevelopinanygivenfieldbymanyyearsorevendecades),Iwasfilledwithexcitementoverthewonderfulprospectthatthisindustrycouldenjoy.Iyearnedtobesatiatedwithnewconcepts,newknowledge,andnewexpertiseandIdevotedmyselftomyprogramwithindefatigableefforts.Tomyregret,aftercompletingourshareofresearchresponsibilitiesinthe863Projectunderthedirectionofmysupervisor,wehadnofurtheropportunitiestoparticipateinanymeaningfulprojects.IhadnoalternativebuttoduplicatetheNonlinearOpticalLoopMirroranditsApplicationsinOTDMSystemwhichhadalreadybeencompletedbyscientistsabroadandtoverifytheirresearchfindingsbymeansofcomputersimulations.Itwaspreciselythosebackwardresearchconditionsandthelackofchallengingprojectsthatpromptedmetogeneratetheideaofseekingfurtherstudiesabroad.Ibelievedthatthestatusquowouldimposeseriousrestrictionsonthedevelopmentofmyintellectualcapacitiesandontheexploitationofmyacademicpotential.ButfortwoyearsbeforeIcouldbringmyoverseasstudiesintoareality,IworkedattheleadingenterpriseinthecountrystelecommunicationsindustryChinaTelecomBeijingBranchCompany.Asbroadbandnetworksengineerandastechnicalsupportengineer,IwasresponsibleforthedesignandoperationoffourmajorprojectsConstructionofBroadbandIntegrateServicesExperimentalNetwork,ExperimentandConstructionofBroadbandDSLNetworkinBeijing,TestofTimingClockofBeijingSDHNetworksandEquipmentSelectionforBeijingCDMAWirelessNetwork.MydistinguishedworkperformanceresultedinmybeingsenttoMarconiCompanysAmericanheadquarterstoreceiveprofessionaltrainingsinATMtechnology.Nevertheless,Istillfeltthatinacompanyenvironmentworkwasroutinizedandtechnologylackedinnovativeness,fallingfarshortofmypassionsandambitions.Theworkwasmeaningfulonlytotheextentofservingasameansoflivelihood.Refusingtobemiredinamediocrecondition,IdecidedthatthetimehadcomeformetopursueresearchworkthatIhadalwaysloved.Relyingonmysolidfoundationinphysics,mywell-trainedexperimentalskillsandhands-onabilitiesthatIdevelopedovertheheretoforestudiesandwork,IsucceededinenteringtheUniversityofTexasatArlington(UTA).Inthesuperiorlaboratoryconditions,forthefirsttimeinmylifeIhadaproudfeelingofbeinginvolvedinrealscientificresearch.WhenIseehowmyinspirationsturnintorealityinthelaboratory,onceagainforthefirsttimeinmylifeIfeelthatIamcreatingakindofwealthfarmorepreciousandvaluablethanmoneyknowledge.IrealizedthatIhadmadeanabsolutelycorrectdecisiontocometotheUnitedStates.AttheCenterofNanostructureMaterialsandQuantumDeviceFabricationandElectroOpticalResearchCenter,Ihavedonetwoyearscourseworkandoneyearandhalflabresearch.Theyhavesignificantlyenhancedmyabilitytosolveresearchproblemsindependently.Sincelastyear,IhaveconductedextensiveexperimentsinthefieldofnanotechnologyandSemiconductorandoptoelectronicelements.AlthoughtheapproachesandsolutionsIgenerateduringthoseexperimentsfrequentlydifferfromthoseofmysupervisorsinmanyimportantaspects,Ihavemeritedpositivecommentsfromhim.Iamfullyconfidentthatbytheendofthisyearmyresearcheffortswouldcomeintofullfruition.Nevertheless,Istillfeeldiscontented.Inretrospect,Idevelopedacommitmenttoscientificresearchveryearlyandhaveperseveredunderthespiritofthiscommitment.AftermyarrivalintheUnitedStates,Irealizedthatthereistremendousresearchpotentialinmetobetapped.AllIneedtodoistofindanappropriateacademicenvironment.EvenUTAdisappointsmeinthatIhavebeenkeptwaitingfornearlyfouryearbeforeIcouldembarkonamajorresearchprojectthatpromisesimportantresearchfindings.IhavecometotheconclusionthatwhetherinChinaorintheUnitedStatesitissimplyawasteoftimepassivelywaitingforresearchprojects.Consequently,thebestcourseofactionformetotakeistopursueseekaPh.D.programatoneofthetopAmericanuniversities. TheUniversityof#comesontopofmyprioritiesbecauseitisatoprankinguniversityintheUnitedStatesitselfandintheentireworld.InthefieldofElectricalEngineering,inparticular,itenjoysanunparalleledposition.Itoffersmanyresearch-intenseprogramsandtheresearchenvironmentisimpeccable.IamdeeplyawarethatforapersonwhoseeksexcellenceandwhowishestoachievesomeinnovativeresearchresultsinElectricalEngineering,itisimperativethatheorsheplungeintoanenvironmentwhichisaschallengingandcompetitiveasitisstimulating,promisingtherealizationofonesambitions.Ifadmitted,Iplantotakeadvantageoftheresearchresourcestotheirfullestextentandwithin4to5yearsachievemajorbreakthroughsinresearchbasedonwhatIhavesofaraccomplished.IexpectthatthismaylayasolidfoundationformetoundertakelifelongresearchatsomereputedresearchinstitutesofAmericanuniversitiesorworld-classcompanieslikeIntelandIBM.Theconventionaltechnologybasedincommunication,control,dateprocessing,signalprocessing,medicalinstrumentationandinmainstreamcomputersisinatransitionfromelectronicstooptoelectronicsandopticallyenabledtechnologies.Futuregenerationsofintegratedcircuits,thefoundationofcurrenthightechnologyinfrastructure,areexpectedtoincorporatesignificantopticalfunctionality.Ihopethatmyprospectivestudiesatyourprestigiousuniversitiescansolidifymyknowledgeandbringintofullplaymylatentintellectualcapacities.IhaveexperiencedtoomanydisappointmentsandfrustrationsandwhatIlookforissometrulycreativeandinnovativeresearchworkthatcanleadtoimportantbreakthroughs,whichcanpermitmetojointherankofelitistscientistsexemplifiedbyProf.ChengningYangandProf.Tsung-daoLeewhomIidolize.UsefulExpressionsandSentencePatterns1.FamilyinfluencelUndertheinfluenceofmyfather,Iaspiredtopracticemedicine.lIamsogratefulthatIwasbornintoahappyfamily,inartisticatmosphere,andfortunately,owingto encouragement from my parents, I was able todevelopmyinterestsandstrivedforacareerinart.lAsachild,Ioftenaccompaniedmyfathertohis small coin shop and spent hours watching himwork.
