He listened to other peoples ideas of what might have been inside. So his evidence is an opinion.Suppose you are a German who found the lost Amber Room, what do you think you should do with it? To return it to Russia or keep it in your homeland? During the war my ship was at Konigsberg. One night I was told to help our soldiers put some big wooden boxes onto my ship. They were very heavy and the soldiers said they were full of treasure. The ship went out to sea. LISTENING TEXTOn our voyage, our ship was attacked and sank. Almost everyone died. I had to swim three kilometers before I was saved by a German ship. Nobody had time to save the boxes. They must still be buried in the sand. Now a group of people who are searching for the Amber Room have asked me to help them find the ship. Part B: Anna Petroys story Hello, my name is Anna Petrov. I was a maid at the castle in Konigsberg between 1940 and 1945. One night in 1941 many trucks came to the castle with large boxes. The German soldiers took the boxes into the castle. Later we heard that a special art treasure in the castle was shown to important visitors. Perhaps it was the Amber Room but I never saw it. Then at the end of August, 1944, I heard something explode. When I looked outside I saw that the castle was on fire. The next morning I found some melted pieces of something that looked like honey. Russian soldiers later told me it was amber and it could have come from the Amber Room. Lets learn useful expressionsSpeaking1 Discuss in pairs which person gave the best evidence. The following expressions may help you. What do you think of .?Do you believe . ?How can you be sure of .?How do you know that?I think . I dont agree that .I suppose that . I dont think . S1: I dont know who to believe. They all seem so sure that they are right.S2: How can you know that? Its quite clear that Jan Hasek does not know what happened to the Amber Room. I dont believe him because hes just heard a story from other people.Sample discussionS1: Yes, youre right. His idea cannot be proved. It is not so strong when you look at it closely. Now whats your opinion of Hans Braun? He seems very sure too.S2: I suppose so. Hans Braun said the boxes being put on the ship. But can we be sure he was telling the truth? The boxes may have contained anything-we dont know for sure they they contained the Amber Room. So I cannot be sure that hes correct.S1: How clever you are! In my opinion Anna Petrov gives the strongest evidence. She saw some melted pieces that were honey-coloured after the explosion.I think shes telling the truth when she says that it could have been amber. Do you agree?S2: Yes, I do. I also think she is telling the truth because she has nothing to gain. Jan Hasek and Hans Braun could both make some money if people believed their stories. But Anna cannot make any money. This makes her story more believable.S1: Yes, I agree. Lets fill in the sentence and fid out what other groups think .2 Write down the reasons for your choice. It can be proved that _ gave the best evidence because _Anna PetrovShe saw something that could have come from the Amber Room and she has nothing to gain from her story.Reasons: Jan Hasek is less believable because he owns a little restaurant near the mine. If the search stopped, his business would suffer. Hans Braun is also less believable, because he is working for a company trying to find the ship which carried treasures. unbelievable.Of the three eyewitnesses, only Anna Petrov has no reason for saying what she has said. She is not involved in any current effort to find the treasure. Therefore she is the most believable.1 Read the letter from a German newspaper.
