He never found one, but he did take note of the abundant beaver population. Beaver pelts海狸皮 were in fashion in Europe, fueling a lucrative business. Hudsons report on the regional beaver population served as the impetus for the founding of Dutch trading colonies in the New World, among them New Amsterdam, which would become New York City. The beavers importance in New York Citys history is reflected by its use on the citys official seal.WaragainsttheNativesThe Pavonia Massacre, across the Hudson River in present-day Jersey City resulted in the death of 80 natives in February 1643. Following the massacre, Algonquian tribes joined forces and nearly defeated the Dutch. Holland sent additional forces to the aid of Kieft, leading to the overwhelming defeat of the Native Americans and a peace treaty on August 29, 1645.TheEnglishConquerIn1664,theEnglishconqueredtheareaandrenameditNewYorkaftertheDukeofYork.Slaves1700:Lenapepopulationdiminishedto200Thelate17thcentury:40%ofthesettlerswereAfricanslaves1703:42%oftheNewYorkhouseholdshadslaves在这里填写标题在这里填写内容在这里填写内容在这里填写内容在这里填写内容在这里填写内容在这里填写British and revolution 166417831765:TheStampAct(印花税法)1766-1776:SonsofLiberty(自由之子)1776:DeclarationofIndependenceBattleofLongIsland(长岛会战)1773:TheBostonTeaParty(波士顿倾茶事件)1781:LastvictoryNov.25,1783:WithdrawofthelastbritishforcesAmericanRevolutionFederalandEarlyAmerica178418541789:UnitedStatesConstitutionFirstnationalcapital:1789-1790,FederalHallonWallStreet:thecurrentCongressoftheUnitedStatesThefirstUnitedStatesSupremeCourtUnitedStatesBillofRightsGeorgeWashingtonEconomic center:AlexanderHamiltonOpeningoftheErieCanalAnewstreetgridsystem1842:FirstreservoirThe Great Irish Famine:IrishimmigrantsGovernmentinstitutions:NewYorkCityPoliceDepartmentandthepublicschoolsFederalandEarlyAmerica17841854Native American settlementCONTENTModern historyOverviewNative American settlementBriefIntroductionEuropean settlementFernandoWood1855TammanyHall,anIrishimmigrant-supportedDemocraticPartypoliticalmachineCommissionersPlanof1811ErieCanal1825Thelargestcity1835CentralPark1857Tammany and consolidation: 18551897(1861-1865)Civilwar:commercialloss:Beforethewar,halfofitsexportswererelatedtocotton,includingtextiles纺织品 fromupstate Mills.DraftRiots征兵暴乱 of1863StatueofLiberty1886Tammany and consolidation: 18551897Early20thcentury:18981945Early20thcentury:18981945(1898) Formation of Modern City of New York: In 1898, the modern City of New York was formed with the consolidation of Brooklyn (until then an independent city),Manhattan, and outlying areas. The dominative city:From1890to1930,thelargercitieswerethefocusofnationalattention.Theskyscrapersandtouristattractionswerewidelypublicized.NewYorkCitydominatedtheentirenationintermsofcommunications,trade,finance,popularculture,andhighculture.Morethanafourthofthe300largestcorporationsin1920wereheadquarteredinNewYorkCity.Early20thcentury:18981945Early20thcentury:189819451904:General Slocum maritime海事 disaster1911:TriangleShirtwaistFactoryfireInresponse,thecitymadegreatadvancementsinthefiredepartment,buildingcodes,andworkplaceregulations. Manylargecorporationsmovedtheirheadquarterstothesuburbs,ortodistantcities.Atthesametime,therewasenormousgrowthinservicesespeciallyfinance,education,medicine,tourism,communicationsandlaw.NewYorkremainedthelargestcityandcontinuedasthelargestfinancial,commercial,information,andculturalcenter.PostWorld War II: 19461980sCrime: Raceriots(种族暴乱),gangwars(帮派战争)StreetactivistsandminoritygroupssuchastheBlackPanthersandYoungLordsorganizedrentstrikesandgarbageoffensives,demandingimprovedcityservicesforpoorareas. The 1980s:Unemployment and crime social and economic recoverythe late 1990s:SiliconAlley(dotcomboom)互联网泡沫NeighborhoodsConversion:industrialized-artsorattractiveresidentiale.g.theMeatpackingDistrictandChelsea(inManhattan)andWilliamsburg(inBrooklyn)Population:NewYorkspopulationreachedanall-timehighinthe2000census;accordingtocensusestimatessince2000,thecityhascontinuedtogrow,includingrapidgrowthinthemosturbanizedborough,Manhattan.191980s80spresentpresentEventsThe 911 Attack During this period New York City was also a site of the September 11 attacks of 2001; 2,606 people who were in the towers and in the surrounding area were killed by a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, an event considered highly traumatic创伤 for the city but which did not stop the citys rapid regrowth.
