We should have met up with him by now.K: Welcome, Your Majesty.L: Caius? Are you playing a joke on me?K: No, my Lord.L: Then what man has done this to you?K: Man and woman, my Lord. It was your daughter and son-in-law who had put me in these stocks.King Lear Part 4L: No, no, they wouldnt dare do such a thing!K: Yes, my Lord.L: Never!K: I swear its true.L: This is terrible! They cannot do this to my personal servant! Wheres this daughter?K: Within the castle with her husband.N: At first Regan and her husband refuse to speak to Lear. They say they have been travelling all night and are too tired. However, when King Lear tells their servant that he will go into their bedroom to talk toKing Lear Part 4them, Regan and Cornwall come to the entrance of the castle. Regan and Cornwall enter with some soldiers.R: Its good to see you, Your Majesty.L: Oh, Regan, you wont believe how unkind your sister is. I can hardly talk about it.R: Im sure shes not as bad as all that.L: Shes a monster.R: Father, I really think you should return to Goneril and apologize.King Lear Part 4L: Never! She told me to get rid of half my troops. Shes an unnatural daughter. Let her go to hell!R: I advise you to do as Goneril requests, and return to her castle. You cant stay here, I dont have enough food for even fifty soldiers. I dont know why you need so many, anyway. Even twenty-five are too many.N: Before long Goneril arrives at the castle and the sisters call Lear a silly old man and tell him he is selfish to keep so many soldiers with him. They tell him he should keep just a few old men with him and tell all the rest to go home. Lear angrily tells his daughters he will live in neither of their houses. King Lear Part 4He rushes away from the castle into the countryside just as a storm is beginning. Regan locks the doors of the castle behind him ( the sound of an approaching storm)King Lear Part 5N= Narrator G= Gloucester K= Kent L= LearN: Kent is taken out of the stocks and allowed to go free. He finds Lear walking around the countryside in a storm. He tries to get Lear to go into an old hut to shelter from the storm, but Lear has become mad after all that has happened to him. An old friend, the Duke of Gloucester finds the King, and he and Kent King Lear Part 5take him to Gloucesters home. Now they are in Gloucesters bedroom.G: Youll be much warmer in here.K: I thank you for your kindness. Come, Your Majesty, would you like to lie down and rest?L: No, no, not yet. First I must see Goneril in prison.N: Lear points at a stool.L: Here she is. This is the daughter who kicked the king, her poor father.N: He now points at a chair.King Lear Part 5L: And heres another. She has a heart of stone. Quick, quick, dont let her escape.K: He thinks the furniture is his daughters! The king grow mad.G: Its no wonder with all thats happened to him. He was once a great king and now he has nothing -no home, no friends, no daughters, no soldiers.N: A servant rushes into the room, bows to everyone and then whisper in Gloucesters ear.(Scene: Hurried footsteps come into the room and stop )King Lear Part 5G: Excuse me. (Sound of whispering) The devils ! Ive just been told that there is a plan to kill the king. Hes not safe here. Quickly, take the King to Dover where the Queen of France, Cordelia, his daughter, has just arrived with an army. He will be safe with her.N: They leave, holding Lear between them. Goneril, Regan and their husbands prepare to march to Dover to fight the French.
