有一件事我一直难以释怀，尽管我承认那只是一次小的冒犯。我第一次在公众场合朗诵诗是在迈阿密的一个饭店，读诗前，人们正在用早午餐。当我手捧笔记本往里走时，心里既忐忑又兴奋。一个老妇人招手示意我到她桌前，我以为（愚蠢的我）她想要我的签名新诗集，就径直走了过去。她却把我当成女招待，点了一杯咖啡（我想，我的诗集很薄，容易被错认为是菜单）。我知道这不是有意的残忍行为。但是，尽管后来发生了好多好事，我却清楚地记住了那个场景，因为那提醒我要想别人认真地对待我，还要克服许多困难。回顾往事，我能理解我的愤怒点燃了朗读的激情。实际上，我几乎总是把对我能力的怀疑当成一种挑战，结果常常会赢取另一个追随者，看到冷漠、审慎的眼神在我的语言感召下变得温暖改变而感到满足；体语改变了，笑容意味着我打开了与他们交流的通衢。因此，那天朗读时，我直视着那个女人。她低垂的眼睛告诉我她为她的失礼而羞愧，但当我执意让她抬起头看着我时，她和蔼地允许我直视她以示惩罚。朗诵结束后，我们握了手，以后也再未某面。她或许已经完全忘记了此事，也许无法忘却。Unit 然而，我还算是幸运的一个。成千上万的拉丁女没有受教育、步入社会的权利。对她们来说，生活就是不断与关于拉丁人的传说所造成的错误概念斗争的过程。我的目标就是用现实生活中更有趣的形象取代老套的成见。每一次朗读会，我都希望我讲的故事、我的梦想和工作中遭遇的恐惧，能获得某种普遍真理，从而使我的听众跨越我的特殊肤色、口音或者服饰看到我本身。Unit 2 Communication and
