Aluminium Benchmarking and MeasuringTo develop sustainability indices for measuring and benchmarking the aluminium sectors across the APP Reporting consistency and efficiency gained by the use of the IAI data reporting formatLead Partner: USAParticipating Partners: AllLocations: NilA set of eight indices covering areas of importance across the aluminium sectorIndices development for three years commencing in January 200942. Management of PFC emissionsFlagship Project Enable standard PFC emissions measurement specific to the smelter technology used Use PFC emissions measurement as a tool to improve aluminium production efficiency to minimise emissions 2 components PFC emission reduction system workshops and demonstration study tours First workshop in China April 08 First Study Tour Bell Bay, Tasmania in February 08 Next study tour and workshop planned for early 2009Lead Partner: USAParticipating Partners:Australia, China Locations: USA, Australia, China, 53.Management of Bauxite Residue Flagship Project To address the high volume of bauxite residues produced during the processing of alumina from bauxite Develop technology, practices and alternative uses for residues to reduce the reliance on stockpiling and storage First step is to undertake a literature review to identify current practices and the gaps in existing knowledge literature review now to be underpinned by ongoing databaseLead Partner: AustraliaParticipating Partners:China and IndiaLocations: Australia, China, India64. High Silica Bauxite Processing Develop environmentally and economically viable ways of processing high silica bauxites to reduce energy and caustic soda consumption Review current practices to limit reactive silica and lower soda forms of desilica product, develop processing options and conduct pilot trials A database and literature review have been commenced with the next step guided by the Task ForceLead Partner: AustraliaParticipating Partners:China and IndiaLocations: Australia, China, India75. Fluoride Emissions Management To provide the necessary information to smelter operators to assess their own emissions performance and enable them to implement best practice and technology to improve this performance Chinese industry support and participation confirmed Fluoride Emissions Management Guide to be producedLead Partner: AustraliaParticipating Partners:China and IndiaLocations: Australia, China, India86. Aluminium Recycling To develop data monitoring and a comprehensive data base of best practices for aluminium recycling Data monitoring for recycling has been included as one of the eight indices in the Measuring and Benchmarking project Best practice component to be address through adhoc presentations on recycling at Task Force Meetings and appropriate outreach opportunities.Lead Partner: USA/JapanParticipating Partners:Australia and ChinaLocations: Nil97.
