My Captain! is a metaphor poem written in 1865 by Walt Whitman, about the death of American president Abraham LincolnLincolns DeathHe was assassinated on April 14, 1865, only five days after the end of the Civil War.It was the first murder of a president in the history of the United States.The Captain of the NationWalt Whitman, a famous American poet, wrote this poem about Abraham Lincoln shortly after his assassination. Whitman wanted to capture the sense of tragedy that suddenly overwhelmed the nation. The 1989 film Dead Poets Society makes repeated references to the poem, especially when English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams) tells his students that they may call him O Captain! My Captain!. At the end of the film, the students show their support to the recently-dismissed Keating in defiance against the schools headmaster, by calling the phrase in the classroom. The ship spoken of is intended to represent the United States of America, while its fearful trip recalls the troubles of the American Civil War.
