DESIGNThebuildingofMGAintroducednewspatialordertotheoldbackyardsandruinedbuildingsinRajskaandSzujskiegostreetsinKrakow.Thestartingpointwasamultifunctionalhall,whichwasenteredintotheoutlineoftheold,19th-centuryhorse-ridingarena,usedinthelastyearsofitshistoryasworkshopsandstoragespacefortheJuliuszSowackiTheatreinKrakw.BREAD DESIGNTheMaopolskaGardenofArtsisacrossbetweentwoinstitutions:theJuliuszSowackiTheatreandtheMalopolskaVoivodeshipLibrary.ThewingonSzujskiegoStreetholdsamodernartandmedialibrary,withmultimediabooksandmusic,whilethesectionstandingonul.Rajskahasbeendevelopedbythetheatre,andisequippedwithamultifunctionaleventshall.SiteplanBREAD DESIGNThenewhalloperating,asastudiotheatre,conferenceroom,concerthall,andvenueforbanquetsandexhibitionsholdsretractablestagesfor300people.State-of-the-artstagetechnologyispresentoverhead:fixedonhoistsandcranestothesteelceilinggirders.Thisallowsdramasandconcertstobeperformed,andexhibitions,filmscreenings,symposiums,conferences,artauctions,fashionshows,andmanymoreeventstobeheld.BREAD PPT DESIGNArchitectKrzysztofIngarden(collaboratingwithJacekEw),claimsthattheformofthebuildingisacontextualgamebetween“mimesisandtheabstraction”.Inpractice,thismeansthatthebuildingisbynomeansasimulacrumofthecontext,butratherdrawsinspirationfromthecodeofcontextualformsbymakingreferencestothegeometryoftheroofsandtissueoftheneighbouringstructuresappliedfortheabstractgeometricalcompositionsofthefaades.Thebuildingfitsthescaleofitsenvironmentperfectlybymaintainingthelinesoftheroofanddivisionsofthefaadesinlinewiththecompositionandlinearsolutionsoftheneighbouringbuildings.BREAD DESIGNHoningtheform,thearchitectsfocusedoninteractionwiththefuturerecipients,whichiswhytheentirespatialformofthesymbolic,openworkroofingraisedoverthegardenfromthesideofRajskaStreetthoughnotfunctioningasanactualroofistheretotransportthegatewaytothestageoutontothestreet.Inthisway,thebuildingdelicatelynudgespassers-bywiththeskilfulmanipulationoftheform,alreadyatfirstglancegivingtheonlookertheimpressionofgoingbeyondthebordersofagarden,wherecultureisgrowninevenlyplantedrows.BREAD DESIGNFurtherproofofthesophisticatedplaywiththespaceisthegardenitself.Imitatingflowerbeds,theequalbandswithlowgreensareametaphorofagarden:asmuchasthearchitectscouldaffordhere.Anotablefactisthathistorically“ulicaRajska”literally“ParadiseStreet”ledtotheGardenofParadise,whichwaslaterreplacedbythedevelopmentsoftheTobaccoWorks.BREAD DESIGNThefinalimpactistheresultofthedesignerssensitivitytosignalscomingfromtheenvironment.Forexample,theopeningintheperforatedroofofthegardenwasformed,especiallyforthemapletreethatgrowsthere.Inrecognitionofitsexquisitesenseofspatialcompositionandcreativeforminhistoricalcontext,thebuildingwasawardedwiththeProfessorJanuszBogdanowskiPrize,forthebestarchitecturalachievementinKrakowintheyear2012.Inthisplace,theculturallifeoftheKrakwsyoungartisticsetwillblossomunderasharedroof.Modernballet,contemporarytheatreforms,audioandvideoarts,concerts,andallandanyotherartisticpursuitswillfindtheirhomehere.Togetherwiththetechnicalfurnishingofthestage,theconstructionprojectconsumedapproximatelyPLN47million,andwasco-financedfromEUfundsasapartoftheMaopolskaRegionalOperationalProgramme20072013.BREAD DESIGNWYSPIASKI2000PAVILIONRaisedin2007,thebuildingfillsthegapinthetissueofKrakwscitycentrethatemergedafterthedemolitionofthebuildingPodLipkin1939.StandingonthecornerofGrodzkaStreetandWszystkichwitych(AllSaints)Square,situatedbytheRoyalRoutebetweentheMainMarketSquareandWawelCastle,surroundedwithhistoricalarchitecturedatingbackasfarasGothic.BREAD PPT DESIGNBREAD PPT DESIGNThetwomainfunctionsofthebuilding,namely,toprovideinformationandtodisplaythestained-glasswindows,requireddistinctiveinteriorspaces.Thematerialusedestablishesadialoguewiththeneighbouringbuildings.Usedfortheexternalwall,bricksofspecialform,trapezoidalincross-section,werearrangedvertically.Suchadeploymentprovidedadistinctiveexternalmovablecurtain:anexternalsystemofshutters.Thisnewformofaceramiccurtain,adjustedtothefunctionalandlightingneedsofinteriorishighlycontemporaryinitsexpression,yetremainsconsistentwiththehistoryoftheplace.In2009,thebuildingwontheawardsoftheAssociationofPolishArchitects(SARP),ArchitectsChamber,andtheMayoroftheCityofKrakwforthebestbuildingbuiltinKrakwinthelast20yearsBREAD
