During these “critical periods”, rapid development occurs at the behavioral and neuronal levels, which subsequently becomes much more resistant to furtherplasticity induction. Genetics cannot predict in what kind of an environment a particular brain will live. Thus, the brain needs to remain highly plastic in order to accommodate/adjustto its specific environment (social, physical, own body). Once specific characteristics of the environment become familiar (and are known to be stable over time), brains can adjust and, subsequently, high levels of plasticity are no longer required, leading to the closure of critical periods. At the same time, the fact that the brain responds to, and changes with experience throughout life also shows that not all aspects of neuronal plasticity are regulated by tight critical periods.
