Before we seek financial guidance, how do we get to know our money personalities? This is Your Brain On Money, with questions answered by financial therapist, Dr. Brad Klontz. How do our personalities demonstrate in the way we deal with money? After studying tens of thousands of people, weve identified four patterns of beliefs around money that people exhibit. The first is money avoidance. No surprise, if so, it is going to have a negative impact on your financial outcomes. The second is what we call money worship. Youre putting money on a pedestal-more money is going to make me happier and its going to solve all my problems. The third is money status, where we compare self-worth with our net worth. The fourth is money vigilance. This is the money personality of the wealthy and the self-made wealthy and the ultra-wealthy. How can these money personalities impact our behavior? There are some people who can be hot-headed. And that can result in good options, but can also make them make decisions without fully looking into everything. Or maybe someone whos a little bit more risk- tolerant. So theyre more of a saver or they dont invest right away. There are ways those things become part of our internal narrative of how we think about money, and of how we handle risk or opportunities. And if we are aware of that, we can make better decisions for ourselves. The more you know yourself, the better you can shape your decisions. It could actually change whatever decision you want to make financially in the future. 2
